Age at Home with the Help of These Illinois Charities

Although most Americans prefer to age in place, its not always easy. Seniors may have a hard time cooking for themselves, arranging transportation for errands and social activities, and completing household chores. However, some generous charities make it easier for seniors to age at home.

Meals on Wheels

One in six Americans over the age of 60 face the threat of hunger, a number that has greatly increased since the recession. The Meals on Wheels Association of America is the oldest and largest national organization composed of and representing local Senior Nutrition Programs. These programs provide meals to seniors who need them each day, including seniors with chronic health conditions, limitations in activity, and seniors taking medications 2-3 times per day; Meals on Wheels also helps half a million veterans. 92% of clients say Meals on Wheels means they can continue to live in their own home. You can find a local meal here.

Little Brothers- Friends of the Elderly

When aging in place, it can  be hard to maintain social activities (especially if you cant drive yourself), or you may live far away from your close family, which can lead to loneliness. Little Brothers is a national organization dedicated to relieving isolation and loneliness among the elderly. The group provides free programs so that seniors can form new friendships and organizes outings such as going to a Cubs game, having a weekly Coffee Club, throwing holiday parties, and even organizing vacations (or in-home vacations, for elders who arent well enough to leave their house). H.O.M.E. (Housing Opportunities & Maintenance for the Elderly)

HOME has been in existence for over 30 years, helping Chicagos seniors live rich, independent lives within their communities. Their services include home upkeep and repair for seniors (including adding home access products like bathroom grab bars or bath tub lifts), a shopping bus to help seniors with limited mobility run errands, and free weatherization and painting for seniors homes.
